How to set up my leaf net
Question:
This will be the second winter for our pond. I learned from last season and covered it with netting. But when I got home yesterday I found a dried up frog that had gotten stuck in the net. I didn’t think about the other creatures in the pond. Is there a safe way to keep the leaves out and let the frogs come and go?
Answer:
Frogs sometimes die in the pond – sometimes just from old age or from disease. That said….they can also die because they cannot get out to search for food or cannot come up sufficiently to get oxygen.
It is best to use a net that reaches a little past the perimeter of the pond and raise it around the edges a bit (maybe drape it over rocks). You can even leave a few “escape holes” around the edges.
